How to use a Yoni Egg

Whether you’ve just received your first yoni egg or you’ve had one sitting in a drawer for months wondering where to start, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from choosing the right egg to building a practice that actually lasts.

Used for centuries in Taoist traditions and now embraced by women around the world, yoni eggs are more than a pelvic floor tool. When used with intention, they can deepen your connection to your body, release stored tension, and support long-term pelvic and emotional health.

Let’s begin.

What is a Yoni Egg?

Yoni eggs are used for:

  • Strengthening and toning the pelvic floor
  • Developing greater internal body awareness
  • Releasing tension and held emotion from the pelvic bowl
  • Deepening the connection between mind, body, and sexuality
  • Supporting pelvic health through perimenopause and beyond

They are not a medical device and are not a replacement for professional pelvic health care — but as part of a consistent practice, they can be a genuinely powerful tool.

Choosing the Right Yoni Egg

Before you can learn how to use a yoni egg, you need the right one. Yoni eggs usually come in three sizes — large, medium, and small — and the right size depends on your body and your experience level.

Large is recommended for beginners, postpartum women, or those with a more open or relaxed pelvic floor. The larger size is easier to feel internally, which helps you learn the subtle muscle movements the practice requires.

Medium suits most women who have some body awareness and pelvic floor tone.

Small is for women with a strong, well-trained pelvic floor, or those who have been practising for some time. Holding a small egg requires much more muscular control.

At Tantric Tools we just sell one size – medium – because in our experience, it’s the only egg most women will ever need.

You don’t need the bigger one to begin with because initial practices are lying down practices so the egg won’t fall out.

You don’t need a smaller egg unless you are very advanced (we both use medium eggs).

So we just sell one size to save confusion.

Material matters too. Always choose a yoni egg made from genuine, body-safe stone — ideally borosilicate glass or suitable crystal – there are a huge range of crystals that are unsuitable due to porousity or toxicity so choose wisely.

Never use an egg that is chipped, cracked, or has not been certified as body-safe.

At Tantric Tools, all our yoni eggs are made from properly sourced, body-safe glass and crystals. You can explore our range and get personalised guidance on which egg is right for you [here].

How to Cleanse Your Yoni Egg Before Use

Before inserting your yoni egg for the first time — and before every subsequent use — it must be thoroughly cleansed.

Physical cleansing:

Wash your yoni egg with warm water and a mild, unscented soap. Rinse thoroughly to ensure no soap residue remains. Do not boil crystal eggs as this can damage the stone. Do not use harsh chemical cleansers.

Energetic cleansing:

Many women also like to cleanse their egg energetically before use. You might:

  • Place it in direct moonlight or sunlight
  • Hold it in your hands and set a clear intention for your practice
  • Smudge it with sage or palo santo

This step is optional, but it can help you approach your practice with more focus and intention.

In our Yoni Egg course we have a beautiful guided practice to charge your egg with your intention before using it.

How to Prepare Yourself Before Insertion

A yoni egg practice is not something to rush. Arriving at your practice with care and presence makes an enormous difference to what you experience.

Before inserting your egg:

Create space. Find somewhere private, warm, and comfortable. This is time for you.

Warm your body. Cold muscles are contracted muscles. Take a warm bath beforehand, do some gentle hip circles or stretching, or simply spend a few minutes breathing slowly and allowing your body to soften.

Connect with your breath. Take several slow, deep breaths into your belly and pelvis. Let each exhale be a conscious release.

Check in with yourself. Is your body open and willing today? A yoni egg practice should always be entered freely and comfortably. If you’re stressed, rushing, or your body feels closed, it’s fine to wait.

How to Insert a Yoni Egg

First you want to thread your egg with string for easy removal. Double your string and thread it through the hole, and tie it at the end. This allows your egg to be removed easily.

You may wish to use a small amount of natural lubricant — such as organic coconut oil or chemical free water-based lube— to make insertion more comfortable, especially when beginning. You can also use saliva.

Step-by-step insertion:

  1. Hold the egg with the larger, rounder end pointing downward (this is the end that will enter first)
  2. Find a comfortable position — squatting, lying down with knees bent, or standing with one foot raised
  3. Take a slow breath in, and on the exhale, gently guide the egg to the entrance of the vagina
  4. Allow your body to draw the egg in naturally — do not push or force. If your body resists, pause, breathe, and try again another time
  5. Once inserted, the egg should sit comfortably inside the vaginal canal

How to Use a Yoni Egg: The Practice

Once your egg is inserted, this is a super basic practice you can do:

  • Inhale to prepare
  • On the exhale, gently squeeze the vaginal muscles around the egg, drawing it upward
  • At the same time, pull gently on the string to provide resistance.
  • Hold for a few seconds, then consciously release and soften on the next inhale
  • Repeat 5 times.

The key difference from standard Kegels: with a yoni egg, the release is as important as the contraction. Many women have overly tight pelvic floors rather than weak ones. Learning to fully let go is as vital as learning to hold.

Guided Practice with Breathwork

The most transformative work happens when you combine the egg with conscious Taoist breath techniques — directing breath and awareness deep into the pelvic bowl, activating different sections of the vaginal muscles, and using the practice as a gateway to deeper body connection.

This is the level of practice we teach in our [Yoni Egg Workshop].

How to Remove Your Yoni Egg

Removal should be as gentle and unhurried as insertion.

To remove your egg:

  1. Find a comfortable position — squatting works well as gravity assists
  2. Take a few slow breaths and consciously relax your pelvic floor
  3. Gently pull the string as you push gentle on the egg.

If the string breaks, don’t panicThe egg cannot travel further into the body. Relax, breathe

Squatting and bearing down gently will let the egg release.

Once removed, cleanse your egg thoroughly before storing.

How Often Should You Use a Yoni Egg?

Consistency is more valuable than intensity. A short, regular practice is far more effective than occasional long sessions.

For beginners, two to three sessions per week of 15 minutes each is an excellent starting point. As your practice develops, you will naturally find your own rhythm.

It is also wise to take a break during menstruation. Many women find this a natural time to rest the practice and turn their energy inward in other ways.

Important Safety Considerations

  • Do not use a yoni egg during pregnancy without the guidance of a qualified pelvic health professional
  • Avoid use if you have an active infection, IUD, or recent pelvic surgery — consult your GP or pelvic physiotherapist first
  • If you experience discomfort or pain at any point, remove the egg and rest
  • Do not use a damaged egg — check your egg for chips or cracks before every use
  • Yoni eggs are not a treatment for medical conditions. For conditions such as prolapse, urinary incontinence, or PCOS, please also seek professional pelvic health care. A yoni egg practice can be a supportive complement to professional treatment, but is not a replacement for it.

Taking Your Practice Deeper

Learning how to use a yoni egg physically is just the beginning.

The real transformation comes when you understand the subtleties of the practice — how to breathe into your pelvic bowl, how to activate and differentiate different muscle groups, how to use your practice to release held emotion and stored tension, and how to approach your yoni with the care and reverence she deserves.

This is exactly what our Yoni Egg Workshop was built to teach. Over four months of progressive, guided audio practice — delivered at your own pace — you’ll develop a practice that can genuinely change your relationship with your body.

Women who have completed the course describe it as one of the most transformative things they have ever done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a yoni egg if I’ve never done pelvic floor exercises before? Yes. In fact, many women find the yoni egg easier to connect with than standard Kegel exercises, because you can actually feel it internally.

How long does it take to see results? Most women begin to notice increased awareness and subtle changes within the first few weeks of consistent practice. Deeper changes — in tone, sensation, and emotional release — often come over months.

Is it normal to feel emotional during practice? Yes, completely. The pelvis holds a great deal of physical and emotional tension. It is not unusual to feel unexpected emotions arise — grief, joy, release. This is a sign the practice is working. Be gentle with yourself.

What if I can’t feel the egg at all? This is common, especially at first. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Focus on the awareness practices rather than the exercises. Sensation develops with time and practice.

Can I use a yoni egg with an IUD? We recommend consulting your GP or pelvic floor physiotherapist before using a yoni egg if you have an IUD. While many women do use them together safely, individual circumstances vary.
